MANTECA, CA – August 2003 – Tenet Healthcare Foundation, a charitable foundation sponsored by Tenet Healthcare Corporation, has awarded a college scholarship to local student, Jennifer Schmitt, daughter of Kevin Schmitt, Bio-Med Tech at Doctors Hospital of Manteca.

“As a healthcare company, it is a way of recognizing our mission and investing in the work force of tomorrow,” said Barbara B. Luton, vice president, corporate citizenship, and executive director, Tenet Healthcare Foundation.  “We are extremely pleased to congratulate all the winners and their parents for this outstanding scholastic achievement.”  DHM Chief Executive Officer, Katherine Medeiros agreed, “I think Jennifer is outstanding!  She’s worked very hard and she’s gone above and beyond… This is the kind of person we look for in future employees.”

Jennifer will be attending the University of the Pacific in Stockton and plans to major in Business Marketing in Arts and Entertainment.  Jennifer spends her free time performing with the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra, does volunteer work for the American Cancer Society and the Oakdale Senior Citizen Complex, and attends vacation Bible school.  During her high school career, Jennifer participated in the California Scholarship Federation, the Modesto High School Marching Band and Concert Band, and completed the international Baccalaureate program.

This year, Tenet Foundation awarded a total of  $302,000 to 173 recipients through the Tenet Children of Employees Scholarship program.   In four years, the program has awarded 676 scholarships totaling more than $955,000 to deserving college-bound children of Tenet employees.  The Children of Tenet Employees Scholarship program is administered for Tenet Foundation by Scholarship America, a division of Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of America Inc.

Endowed by Tenet, Tenet Foundation, along with Doctors Hospital of Manteca, directs most of its grants to help unmet healthcare needs in the communities.  The Foundation also provides grants to various educational, social services, civic and humanities-supporting organizations nationwide.

Doctors  Hospital of Manteca is part of Tenet California, the state’s largest hospital system.  Located at 1205 East North Street, Manteca, Calif., Doctors Hospital of Manteca opened its doors in 1962 as a 28-bed, 41-employee, nine-physician rural community hospital in the heart of California's Central Valley.  Over the years, the hospital expanded services to keep pace with the needs of a rapidly growing community. A multi-million dollar addition and upgrade construction project increased the hospital's capacity to 73 beds.  One of the largest businesses in the community, Doctors Hospital now has more than 375 employees and a medical staff of 160 physicians.  While maintaining small-town comfort, Doctors Hospital offers many advanced services.  Patient rooms, expanded radiology, emergency, pharmacy, physical therapy, ICU/CCU and obstetrics areas are designed for the care and comfort of our patients.
