The San Joaquin County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency conducted a multi-agency full-scale (live action) security exercise at Doctor’s Hospital of Manteca on Friday, October 24th from 2:00 AM to 4:00AM.
The San Joaquin County EMS Agency, in cooperation with the Manteca Police Department, organized the exercise as part of the County’s implementation of the National Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP). The exercise was designed specifically for Doctor’s Hospital to practice internal disaster procedures under simulated real-life conditions. Major goals of the exercise focused on the integrated emergency response, command function and coordination of Doctor’s Hospital and Manteca Police Department with the County’s Medical/Health Operational Area Coordinator. Doctor’s Hospital will remained open during the exercise with no interruption of services.
This exercise is the fourth in a series being conducted at all seven acute care hospitals in San Joaquin County during the months of September, October and November 2008. The one-day exercises are based on a simulated security threat at each hospital requiring an emergency response from either city police departments or the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department. In addition, coordination with the San Joaquin County Medical/Health Operational Area Coordinator will be tested during each exercise.
The National Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) provides federal grant funding to hospitals, clinics, and EMS to improve communications and preparedness for responding to a surge of large numbers of patients resulting from natural disasters and acts of terrorism. The San Joaquin County EMS Agency serves as the HPP Coordinator for San Joaquin County.
