PET/CT DIABETIC PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS
Special Instructions:It is very important that you manage your glucose(sugar) intake prior to the exam. If your glucose is not at the right level, the exam may be cancelled, or the results may not
be optimal.
General Instructions:
- If your blood glucose is above 200mg/dl please call us at (209) 823-1504 and ask to talk to a technologist.
- If you are between the ages of 13 and 55 years old, you must have a pregnancy test before your scheduled appointment.
- If you have had a PET/CT scan within the last 2 months please call us at (209) 823-1504 and ask to speak to a technologist.
- No food from midnight or 6 hours prior to appointment.
- No strenuous exercise, no gum chewing, no smoking 24 hours prior to the exam.
- Low carbohydrate foods/ no caffeine / no nicotine / no alcohol 24 hours prior to the exam.
- Avoid cold temperatures / stay warm for 48 hours prior to the exam; continue remaining warm through injection and uptake phase of exam.
- You may take your medications (with water only) prior to arrival at Manteca Imaging Center. If you need to take your medications with food please hold taking the medication until after the exam.
- You will be asked to limit talking 5 minutes before injection and during uptake phase of exam to limit laryngeal muscle uptake.
- We recommend eating something fatty the day prior to exam(fried eggs, bacon).
- Do not bring children to the appointment.
Foods Allowed (the day before): All meats (beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish), tofu, cheeses, oil, margarine, butter, eggs, and non-starchy vegetables.
Foods NOT Allowed (the day before): Cereals, breads, jams, jellies,
peas, corn, potatoes, fruits, juices, sodas, gravies, milk(including non-dairy milks), pastas, sugar, candy, alcohol and rice.
Diabetic patients on oral medication:
- No food 6 hours prior to exam
- Take diabetic medication and follow the general instructions above 24 hours prior to exam.
- Hold taking Metformin or Metformin containing diabetic drugs (Glucophage, Janumet) 12 hours prior to exam
Diabetic who are insulin dependent:
- No food 6 hours prior to exam. Follow the general instructions above 24 hours prior to exam.
- No insulin administration 1 hour before appointment.
- You may take your long lasting insulin on the day of the appointment if taken 1 hour prior to appointment.
- No regular insulin (Humulin R) to be taken within 1 hour of appointment.
- Please bring your insulin to your appointment.
Diabetic on insulin pump:
- Follow general instructions above 24 hours prior to appointment.
- Continue pump as usual.
The exam may take 2 to 3 hours to complete.
